Excavators are the machine most likely to be sitting idle in an Australian contractor yard, because they are the machine most likely to be bought for one job and then outgrown, replaced or simply parked when something expensive fails. A digger with a hydraulic problem is not worth repairing for many owners and is not easy to sell.

We buy them either way. A sound, low-hour machine with attachments and service history is priced as a resale unit and we would rather it went back to work. A machine with a serious fault is priced on its recoverable components and its steel, which is a great deal more than most owners assume.

Size is not a limitation. We buy 1.7 tonne mini excavators off suburban landscaping jobs and 30 tonne machines off civil and quarry sites, and everything between.

What Drives an Excavator Price

On a working machine the hour meter, the brand and the undercarriage condition do most of the work. Undercarriage is the item owners most often underestimate: worn tracks, sprockets, idlers and rollers represent a large replacement bill, and a buyer prices that in immediately. So does the state of the pins and bushes on the boom, arm and bucket.

On a non-working machine the valuable items are the final drives, the hydraulic pumps and control valve, the swing motor, the engine or engine core, the rams and the electronics - plus the substantial steel tonnage in the boom, arm, counterweight and undercarriage. Final drives in particular have a strong rebuild market and often carry more value than owners expect.

Attachments are priced separately and add up quickly. Buckets in a range of widths, a ripper, a tilt hitch, a hydraulic hammer or an auger drive should all be mentioned when you call, even if they came from a different machine.

Getting a Dead Digger Off Your Site

A machine that cannot be tracked onto a float is the reason many dead excavators sit for years. Winching a seized machine up a low loader is a specific job with specific equipment, and general transport operators are often unwilling to attempt it. We do it routinely.

Tell us where the machine actually is and what it can still do - whether it starts, whether it tracks, whether it slews, and whether it can be moved at all under its own power. That determines whether we bring a winch float, a tilt tray or a crane, and it is the single biggest factor in scheduling a clean collection.

Site conditions matter too. Soft or boggy ground, overhead powerlines, narrow access, locked compounds and induction requirements all change the plan. None of it changes what we pay you.

Cash for Excavators and Diggers - Questions & Answers

Yes. A blown engine does not remove the value in the final drives, hydraulic pumps, swing motor, rams, electronics and steel. It is one of the most common conditions of the machines we buy.
